Highlights of Osaka City Central Public Hall
An Icon of Modern Architecture in Osaka
Osaka City Central Public Hall is a beautiful red-brick building on Nakanoshima. Featuring a façade that combines red brick with white stone and a gracefully curved roof, it is known asone of Osaka's leading examples of modern architecture.
The building was made possible by a donation from Einosuke Iwamoto, who had made his fortune as a stockbroker. Construction began in 1913 and was completed in 1918. Kingo Tatsuno and Yasushi Kataoka developed the detailed design based on Shinichiro Okada’s original proposal.
Designation as an Important Cultural Property

Many years after its completion, Osaka City Central Public Hall had begun to deteriorate, prompting preservation and restoration work from 1999 to 2002. Its original appearance was retained as much as possible while seismic reinforcement and facility upgrades were carried out. In December 2002, it was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
Built more than 100 years ago, the public hall remains in active use for concerts, lectures, and other events. An exhibition room on basement level 1 presents the hall’s history, with photographs from the time of its construction and materials about its preservation and restoration work.
Nakanoshima
Nakanoshima, where the public hall stands, lies between the Dojima and Tosabori rivers. During the Edo period, storehouses belonging to feudal domains lined the island, receiving rice and other goods from across Japan. Today, the area is dotted with art museums and historic buildings, offering a glimpse into Osaka’s history while strolling along the waterfront.
