About Osaka
Osaka is the capital of Osaka Prefecture.
The city has a population of approximately 2.7 million, making it the third largest after Tokyo and Yokohama. By metropolitan-area population and gross regional product, it ranks second after Tokyo.
“Ōsaka” was the final destination of the kitamaebune ships that transported goods from Hokkaido via the Sea of Japan and the Seto Inland Sea. During the Edo period, it was Japan’s center of logistics and commerce. This is why Ōsaka was called the nation’s kitchen.
The route through Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Kyoto, and Osaka is considered the Golden Route for international visitors. Minami’s bustling districts, including Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori, Namba, Kuromon Market, and Shinsekai, are always crowded with overseas tourists. The Golden Route might be described as a modern-day counterpart to the Kitamaebune trading ships.
