About Aomori
Aomori is the capital of Aomori Prefecture and the northernmost core city on Honshu.
During the Edo period, Hirosaki was the capital of the Tsugaru Domain, while Aomori was developed as its outer port. In the Meiji period, Aomori was expected to serve as the gateway to the development of Hokkaido and was designated the prefectural capital.
Moored in the harbor area is the former Seikan ferry Hakkōda Maru, now a museum exploring the history of passenger voyages and freight transport in its day.
On the outskirts of the city is the Sannai-Maruyama Site, the remains of a large Jomon-period settlement and a World Heritage Site. Pit dwellings, raised-floor buildings, and other structures have been reconstructed across the expansive grounds, offering insight into life during the Jomon period.
Also held every summer, the Aomori Nebuta Festival is famous throughout Japan for its magnificent illuminated nebuta floats and the dancing of the haneto performers.Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse offers year-round opportunities to explore the festival's history and see large nebuta floats.
