Highlights of the Aomori Nebuta Festival

The Aomori Nebuta Festival is a summer festival held every year in central Aomori from 8 to 2 7. Illuminated floats depicting historical and mythological themes are brought to life by the music and the shouts of the haneto dancers. In 1980, the festival was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.

Its origins are explained in connection with floating lanterns during Tanabata and the tradition of “nemuri-nagashi,” but the official website states that this is not an established theory. In Aomori, records show that people carried lanterns during the Edo period; figure-shaped lanterns became predominant from the Meiji period onward and developed into today’s large nebuta after the war.

Large Nebuta

The large nebuta floats depict kabuki, warriors, legends, and historical scenes as three-dimensional lanterns. Light from within makes even the face paint, waves, flames, and lines of the garments stand out against the night sky. Look not only at the front, but also at the side and rear compositions revealed when the float changes direction.

The enormous floats spin at intersections and come close to the spectators. This movement is part of the appeal of the festival in full swing, something that is difficult to experience at an exhibition facility. Because the number and order of the floats change from day to day, watching on multiple days lets you compare the themes and expressions of each nebuta master.

Music and Haneto Dancers

Haneto are dancers who jump to the accompaniment of flutes, hand cymbals, and drums while chanting “rassera, rassera.” Anyone can participate without belonging to a group or registering in advance, as long as they wear the full festival costume, including a flower hat, sash, and yukata. Before the procession begins, join a group that is waiting, avoid joining midway, and follow the instructions of the procession staff.

Service changes from day to day

On 8 month 2 and 3, children’s nebuta and large nebuta parade at night; from 4 through 6, large nebuta parade at night. On 7, following the daytime parade of large nebuta, the Aomori Fireworks Festival and the nebuta parade at sea take place in the evening. The final day is characterized by how differently the nebuta appear by day and night, and on land and at sea.

Getting to the Aomori Nebuta Festival

By train and on foot

It takes about 10 minutes to walk from JR Aomori Station to the festival route. Since the route is extensive, getting around is easier if you choose a viewing location based on the locations of your accommodation, viewing stand, and the station or bus stop you will use on the way back.

By car

During the festival, extensive traffic restrictions are imposed in the city center, and parking lots near the venue also become crowded. If you are entering Aomori by car, check the official traffic restriction map and information about temporary parking lots, then travel on foot or by public transportation after parking.
