Along with goods for tourists, vendors sell vegetables, fruit, flowers, hardware and other items that local people buy for everyday life, making the market itself a reflection of life in Kōchi.
Besides seasonal citrus fruits and vegetables, you can also discover foods unique to Kochi, such as country-style sushi, sweet potato tempura, mochi and dried fish. Since the participating shops and the items on offer vary from day to day, part of the Sunday market’s appeal is browsing the stalls for seasonal ingredients and products characteristic of Kochi.
The market’s history spanning more than 300 years
Kochi's street markets are said to date back to 1690, when the Tosa Domain designated the days and locations for holding them. The tradition continued despite changes in day and location, and today's Sunday Market attracts not only tourists but also local residents doing their everyday shopping.
