Highlights of Tō-ji
Tō-ji was founded during the construction of the capital Heian-kyō as a state temple protecting its eastern side, and was later entrusted to Kōbō Daishi Kūkai as the principal center of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. Its official name is Kyōō Gokoku-ji, and the five-story pagoda, Golden Hall, Lecture Hall, and other structures form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.” Within the grounds, you can see a group of Buddhist statues representing the world of Esoteric Buddhism conceived by Kūkai, along with halls and pagodas rebuilt during the Edo period.

At New Year, kadomatsu are placed on both sides of the gate, while five-colored banners and curtains bearing the temple crest are hung.
The five-story pagoda, a national treasure
Beyond the wall draped with five-colored curtains rises the five-story pagoda that symbolizes Tō-ji. Standing about 55m tall, it is Japan's tallest wooden pagoda, and its commanding presence is striking even from outside the temple grounds.
The five-story pagoda has burned down 4 times, including after lightning strikes. The current structure is the 5th pagoda, rebuilt in 1644 through a donation from Tokugawa Iemitsu. The interior of the first level can be visited only during special opening periods, allowing visitors to experience not only the exterior but also the interior as a space of esoteric Buddhism.

During the special nighttime viewing, cherry trees in full bloom surround the five-story pagoda against the night sky. Unlike its refined daytime appearance, the illuminated pagoda and cherry blossoms lend the temple grounds a festive beauty.
The Kondō and the Three-Dimensional Mandala in the Kōdō
The Kondo main hall, a National Treasure, serves as To-ji’s principal hall and enshrines the Yakushi Triad, with Yakushi Nyorai at the center, along with statues of the Twelve Heavenly Generals. The present building was reconstructed through a donation by Toyotomi Hideyori and is a large temple structure combining elements of Japanese style and Daibutsuyo style.
The adjacent Kodo Lecture Hall houses a three-dimensional mandala featuring 21 Buddhist figures arranged around Dainichi Nyorai, including tathagatas, bodhisattvas, Myo-o, and tenbu. It was conceived by Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi, to express the world of Esoteric Buddhism through Buddhist statues. Walking from the Kondo Main Hall to the Kodo, you can view Tō-ji’s representative architecture and Buddhist art in succession.
Mieidō and devotion to Kōbō Daishi
Mikage-dō is a National Treasure built on the site where Kōbō Daishi Kūkai is said to have lived. During the Shōshinku ceremony, held every morning from 6 a.m., the seated statue of Kōbō Daishi is unveiled, and many worshippers visit for the Mieiku ceremony on the 21st of each month. It is a place where visitors can experience not only the temple buildings but also the faith in Kōbō Daishi that continues to this day.
