Highlights of Nebuta House Wa Rasse
Nebuta House Wa Rasse is an exhibition facility that presents the history and production techniques of the Aomori Nebuta Festival year-round. You can see up close the large nebuta that were paraded during the festival itself, and explore in three dimensions the work of nebuta artists who create enormous forms from paper and frameworks, along with the culture of festival music and haneto dancers.
Large nebuta floats that took part in the festival’s main parade
The Nebuta Hall displays large Nebuta floats that were paraded during the main festival. Unlike along the parade route, where their forms pass by in an instant, here you can closely observe their expressions, fingertips, lines of waves and flames, and the composition of their backs. Light shining from within makes the washi paper’s colors and ink outlines stand out clearly.
The Expression and Crafting Techniques of Each Nebuta Artist
This is Momijigari by Asako Kitamura, which won the award for best creator in 2017. It is no longer on display. Each Nebuta artist’s individuality can be seen in the choice of subject, the way faces are drawn, and the combination of figures and backgrounds. By comparing works from different periods, visitors can learn the entire production process, from the preliminary sketch and framework to paper application, decorative outlining, and coloring.
The Internal Structure Supporting the Light
Large nebuta are enormous lanterns shaped with wood and wire, covered with paper, and lit from within. Learning not only about their finished appearance but also the techniques used to create a three-dimensional form within strict weight and size limits and build a structure strong enough for the parade changes how you see them during the festival.
Experience Nebuta music and the Haneto dance
Inside the building, demonstrations and hands-on activities are sometimes held to introduce festival music played with drums, flutes, and hand cymbals, as well as the way haneto dancers jump. Because you can understand the festival not only by viewing the large nebuta but also through sound and movement, it is suitable for travelers visiting Aomori outside the period of the Aomori Nebuta Festival as well. How to get to Nebuta House Wa Rasse
By train and on foot
It is about 1 minutes on foot from JR Aomori Station toward the sea. Located in front of the station and close to Aomori Bay Bridge and A-FACTORY, this cultural and tourism facility is easy to combine with sightseeing around the city.
By car
The facility has parking for 80 standard cars. Check the official information for hours and fees, and follow traffic restrictions in the area during the Aomori Nebuta Festival.
