What is Galeries Lafayette?

The Galeries Lafayette flagship store wrapped in Christmas decorations
Galeries Lafayette is one of France’s most iconic department stores. At the end of the 19 century, it began as a small clothing shop on Rue La Fayette. Taking advantage of its location near the Palais Garnier (Opéra) and Saint-Lazare station, it expanded, and at the beginning of the 20 century, the main building took on its present form. The main building’s cupola is a signature attraction worth visiting even for reasons beyond shopping.

During the Christmas season, the flagship Galeries Lafayette store on Boulevard Haussmann is decorated with extensive illuminations. Light displays covering the corners of the building stand out along the evening street, and its Noël window display has become a hallmark of the year-end season in Paris. The design and lighting period vary from year to year.

Show Windows

The store’s display windows feature more than clothing and merchandise: they also present story-driven scenes combining mannequins, animals, and stage sets. The displays change with the seasons, such as animal-inspired costumes set against forest scenes. Before entering the building, comparing the windows along Boulevard Haussmann is one way to enjoy the visit.

View from the rooftop terrace

From the rooftop terrace, you can see the nearby Palais Garnier, the Eiffel Tower and even as far as Montmartre. You can stop by without shopping, but it may be closed due to weather or events.
