Things to See at Lake Louise

Lake Louise is a glacial lake and one of the signature sights of Banff National Park. The water contains fine particles of rock ground down by glaciers, reflecting the light and taking on blue-green hues that vary with the season and weather.

Lake Louise
From the lakeshore, you can see Victoria Glacier at the far end of the lake. If you have limited time, take a walk along the shore; with more time, you can combine the visit with a hike toward Lake Agnes.

Lakeside and Victoria Glacier

Along the lakeside trail, you can walk while taking in the water and the surrounding mountains. The lake’s color changes with the light and the seasons. Early morning is generally a good time to enjoy a relatively quiet landscape, while summer afternoons tend to be crowded. Victoria Glacier directly across the lake and the mountain ranges on either side create depth in the view, and even the lakeshore offers the quintessential scenery of the Canadian Rockies.

Fairmont Château Lake Louise

Fairmont Château Lake Louise, standing on the eastern shore of the lake, is a hotel that symbolizes the landscape of Lake Louise. Its history developed alongside the growth of mountain tourism by the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the building viewed from the lake has become part of the scenery typical of a mountain resort. Even if you are not staying there, it serves as a landmark for identifying the starting point of a lakeside walk, but check the hotel’s information for the conditions of using its facilities.

Hiking Trails Leading from the Lakeshore

Hiking trails extend from the lakeshore to Lake Agnes and nearby viewpoints. Routes with elevation gain offer mountain views from different angles than those from the lakeshore, but conditions vary with snow, trail surfaces, and wildlife activity. Wear suitable shoes and warm clothing, check the day’s guidance, and then decide how far to hike.
