Colosseum highlights
The Colosseum is the largest amphitheater in ancient Rome. Visitors can explore the arena surrounded by oval tiers of seating and the network of passages beneath it. While the Roman Forum was the center of politics and commerce, the Colosseum was the center of entertainment. It is called Colosseo in Italian and Colosseum in Latin.

This oval amphitheater is known as a symbol of Rome. Arches arranged in rows on each level remain along the outer wall, allowing visitors to appreciate the monumental scale of ancient Roman architecture even from outside.

The Colosseum was completed in 80, during the reign of Emperor Titus. It is said to have held approximately 5 people, making it comparable in scale to modern football stadiums. The greatest spectacle was the gladiatorial combat, in which gladiators, called Gladiator in Latin and Gladiator in English pronunciation, fought for their lives.

From inside the seating area, you can look across the remains of the passageways and rooms beneath the arena. These backstage spaces supported the spectacles, holding gladiators and animals until they entered the arena.

Although parts have been lost over its long history, the surviving walls, arches, and seating reveal the structure of the ancient amphitheater.
After Constantine 1 became the first in the Roman Empire to officially recognize the Christian Church, the bloody gladiatorial contests are said to have gradually disappeared as Christianity spread.
