Highlights of Castel Sant'Angelo

Castel Sant’Angelo is a massive circular structure whose construction began as a mausoleum for the Roman Emperor Hadrian. It was created as an imperial tomb, but over time its role changed to that of a fortress and refuge for popes; today, it is open to the public as a museum. From its imposing exterior on the banks of the Tiber, you can trace the history of a building that continued to be used long after ancient Rome.

Mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian

Castel Sant'Angelo
Emperor Hadrian ordered it to be built as his own mausoleum. It was completed during the reign of his successor, Antoninus Pius. Even its present form, with a large cylindrical building surrounded by walls, retains the distinctive structure based on the emperor’s tomb.

Because its function changed from an ancient mausoleum to a castle in later centuries, the interior lets you explore layers of space spanning the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages and beyond, rather than just one historical period. From outside, the thick defensive walls and imposing outline immediately stand out; inside, you can follow the passageways and rooms and sense how the tomb was gradually incorporated into a fortress.

The Fortress and the Popes’ Refuge

Castel Sant'Angelo was later used as a fortress. During the Italian Wars, when the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France fought against each other, Pope Clement 7 allied himself with King Francis 1 of France and opposed Holy Roman Emperor Charles 5. When the army of the Holy Roman Empire ravaged Rome, Pope Clement 7 is said to have taken refuge in Castel Sant'Angelo.

What makes Castel Sant'Angelo special is that the different roles of imperial mausoleum, military fortress, and papal refuge overlap in a single building. Viewed together with Ponte Sant'Angelo, which extends toward the entrance, it also helps you understand its position in relation to the city across the Tiber.
