Highlights of the Sagrada Família

The Sagrada Família is one of Barcelona's most iconic tourist attractions. Designed by architect Antoni Gaudí, this magnificent church has been under construction since 1882. Gaudí died in Barcelona in 1926 at the age of 73 after being struck by a tram. The Nativity Façade was completed 4 years later, in 1930. It depicts the birth of Jesus Christ and the joy of life.

After overcoming setbacks including an interruption caused by the Spanish Civil War and the destruction of design documents by fire, the Passion Façade was completed in 2018. It depicts events leading up to the execution of Jesus Christ, including the Last Supper, Judas’s betrayal, Christ carrying the cross, and the Crucifixion. In 2026, 100 years after Gaudí’s death, the church’s central main tower, the Tower of Jesus Christ, will be completed, finally bringing the principal structures at the heart of the Sagrada Família to completion.

Upon entering, you find yourself in a space that resembles a forest. The soaring columns evoke tree trunks and branches, spreading intricately toward the ceiling. Light streaming through the stained glass shifts from blue and green to red and orange depending on the time of day, enveloping the entire church in fantastical colors.

Above the central altar, a crucifix hangs from a canopy symbolizing grapes and wheat, while the surrounding columns are decorated with an angel, a lion, an ox, and an eagle representing the four Evangelists.
