Highlights of the Kamo River
The Kamo River flows north to south through Kyoto and, together with the Higashiyama mountain range, creates a landscape that symbolizes the city. Walking paths and lawns have been developed along the riverbanks, and you can enjoy different scenery along each stretch, from city walks around Shijō and Sanjō to the Kamo Delta at Demachiyanagi.
The Riverside Around Shijō and Sanjō

Although the river flows through the heart of the city, its banks offer plenty of places to sit and relax. It is also well known for the sight of couples sitting at evenly spaced intervals along the riverbank.

From spring through autumn, restaurants on the Pontocho side set up dining platforms extending over the river, creating the characteristic scenery of the Kamo River.

Pontochō stretches along the west bank between Shijō Bridge and Sanjō Bridge, while the opposite bank and the riverside offer views of central Kyoto’s cityscape.

At dusk, the colors of the sky are reflected on the water as the flow over the weir blends with the city lights.
Cherry Blossom Season

In spring, cherry blossoms along the river add color to the waterside, and you can enjoy Kyoto’s cherry-blossom scenery while walking. The density of the trees and the width of the riverbank vary by section, and the views from the bridges differ from those by the water. The flowering season varies from year to year.

Kamo River Delta

This is the Kamo River Delta in Demachiyanagi, where the Kamo and Takano rivers meet. You can cross the river on stepping stones, including some shaped like turtles and birds, while taking in views of both rivers and the Kamo River continuing beyond their confluence. The broad riverbank is a pleasant place to walk by the water or sit and relax.
