Kualoa Ranch Highlights

“Ranch” means a ranch or farm.
When you hear “farm tourism,” you may picture interacting with animals or experiencing dairy farming, but Kualoa Ranch is quite different. Rather than as a ranch, Kualoa Ranch is famous as a filming location for movies including “Jurassic Park”.
Kualoa Ranch is privately owned. Except for the area near the entrance, where the gift shop and other facilities are located, you cannot walk freely around the grounds. You must join some kind of tour. The mode of transport and route vary depending on the tour’s purpose and theme.

With horseback riding, mountain biking, and buggy rides, you hold the reins or handlebars yourself. These activities are recommended for those who want to enjoy something active. Buses, including large buses and trolleys, as well as jeeps come with a driver. They are recommended for those who prefer a more relaxed experience or want their hands free to take photos while moving. A buggy can carry up to 6 people, although not everyone has to drive; it is also more bumpy than a bus or jeep.
Other options include zipline tours, tours where you can learn about and experience sustainability, and boat tours around Kaneohe Bay departing from Kualoa Ranch.
You can also book a tour on site, but advance reservations are recommended. Each tour also has specific age restrictions, so please take particular care when participating as a family.

I joined the “Movie Sites Tour.” The tour travels by bus.
If you know the “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” series but are not very familiar with the other movies, you may enjoy the “Jurassic Adventure Tour” more.
Battery Cooper Bunker

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II, the U.S. military fortified Kualoa Ranch. The bunker built at that time is called the “Battery Cooper bunker” and is now used as a facility introducing films and television programs shot at Kualoa Ranch.

This is a set used in season 6 of “Hawaii Five-0.” It was a popular television drama series that also aired in Japan. The words “Height Adjustment Device, Imperial Japanese Army” are written there.

This mural was created to commemorate the filming of “Mighty Joe.”

We board the bus again and continue on our way. The brilliant blue sky and emerald-green sea are dazzling.

If you look closely, you can make out the words “SCHOOL BUS.” The vehicle body was probably once yellow.
Kaʻaʻawa Valley

Ka'a'awa Valley has served as a filming location for many movies, including Jurassic Park and Kong: Skull Island. You can get off the bus and take commemorative photos.

The buggy is nicknamed “Raptor.” Its model is the Kawasaki MULE PRO-FXT.

This is what a horseback riding tour looks like. It may be the activity that feels most like a ranch experience.
