Highlights of Spa Resort Hawaiians
Spa Resort Hawaiians is a large leisure complex in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, featuring pools, hot springs, Polynesian shows, accommodation, and more. It makes use of hot spring water that wells up from a coal mine and opened on January 15, 1966, as “Jōban Hawaiian Center.” It was created from the idea of recreating Hawaii’s climate and scenery using the hot spring water of Iwaki Yumoto Onsen, and is now considered the most popular resort facility in the Tōhoku region.
The Film “Hula Girls” and the Dance Team
The atmosphere of the resort when it first opened is depicted in the 2006 film “Hula Girls.” It portrays the interactions between women in a coal-mining town who aspire to become hula dancers and a dance teacher. The film won Best Picture at the 30th Japan Academy Prize.
It was a moving scene when, with the piping work to bring in the hot-spring water delayed and the palm trees on the verge of dying, the protagonist’s mother brought out a handcart and went around asking, “Could you lend us a heater?” With the film’s release, the dancing team became known throughout the country, and the name “hula girls” also became widely established.

The vibrant stage show, bringing together ensemble choreography, costumes, and music, is another highlight.
Water Park and Water Slides

The slides are divided into children’s attractions included with admission and large slides that require an additional fee.
The signature Big Aloha is a body slide with a height difference of 40.5m and a length of 283m.
Hot Springs and Spa
The complex includes Spring Park, which is used in swimwear, the outdoor Spa Garden Pareo, and the large open-air bath “Edo Jōwa Yoichi,” where guests bathe in yukata. A distinctive feature is the opportunity to enjoy hot springs with different bathing styles within the same facility.
