Highlights of St Paul’s Cathedral
St Paul's Cathedral is a Church of England cathedral in central London, in the City of London. It is the cathedral of the Diocese of London and the largest church in London.
St Paul is the English name for Saint Paul.
It stands on Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London. This truly feels like the heart of London.
At the beginning of the 7 century, a church dedicated to Saint Paul is built here. It is subsequently destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times.
In the 16 century, during the reign of Henry 8 (of the Tudor dynasty), the Church of England was established. It was Charles 2 (of the Stuart dynasty) who ordered the construction of St Paul’s Cathedral as the cathedral of the Church of England seen today. It was completed from 1675 to 1710, after 35 years of work.

St Paul’s Cathedral was designed by Christopher Wren, and its dome is said to have been inspired by the dome of St Peter’s Basilica.

Inside the Cathedral and the Dome Galleries

The magnificent canopy is also reminiscent of the one in St Peter’s Basilica.
As you proceed from the nave toward the chancel, the dome rises beyond the baldachin, drawing the eye continuously from the floor to the ceiling paintings. Beyond the exterior, experiencing the dome's height and structure from within is another highlight.

The interior of the dome depicts scenes from the life of Saint Paul.

You can climb to the top of the dome. A “Mind your head” poster is displayed along the way.

Admiral Nelson's coffin is housed in the crypt. Admiral Nelson is known as a hero Britain is proud of because he defeated the combined forces of France and Spain at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, leading the British forces to victory.
